ABOUT THE SCOTS PINE ARROW SHAFTS.

Pinus Sylvestris, also known as: Silver Fir and Norway Pine

Chris Boyton, of Boyton Archery in England, started making Scots Pine arrow shafts about seventeen or so years ago, when we could not get Port Orford Cedar from America. The Cedar, chemyceparis lawsoniana, had been felled at such a rate that, to save bird and animal species, as well as the forest itself, the felling was stopped.

For months we could not get arrow shafts from America , until eventually a license was granted to the lumber companies to bring out only deadfall.

Because of the problems we were having with arrow shafting, Chris decided to have a go at making shafts in the quantities needed to supply both the English market and also an outlet in America !

After experimenting with several woods, Chris found that Scots Pine, grown in the cold northern countries of Scandinavia, was the most ecological wood available in the quantities needed. Although other woods were as good, if not better, than the pine, there were problems getting enough that was planted faster than it was being harvested and therefore ecologically friendly.

When Chris made his first batch of arrow shafts, I bought the lot. Amazingly, the spine ratio to numbers of shafts was perfect. Most were 40-45 5/16", at that time the most popular of all the sizes. I think I bought three or four thousand that first time, and after piling them into my van we took a photo of them, Chris’s very first commercial batch of arrow shafts, just for luck. The great thing was that there was a complete range of 5/16" and 11/32". The 23/64" came along a little while later, and then the very popular 9/32" and 1/4". With a lot of you archers realising you don’t need great heavy bows, the smaller diameter shafts are very popular.

Chris has also been making Ash and Poplar arrow shafts. These are suitable for mediæval style arrows and also Longbow Society ‘standard arrow’

Chris built all his own machinery, and designed and had made that which he could not make himself. He has recently built a machine to taper the shafts.

The end result of all his hard work is the excellent shafts you shoot today.
